Hurricane Season Talking Points for Clay Humane
HURRICANE SEASON IS JUNE THROUGH NOVEMBER. HURRICANE SEASON ALSO BRINGS TORNADOES AND FLASH FLOODING THAT MAY COME WITHOUT MUCH WARNING. MAY IS A GREAT TIME TO BEGIN PREPARING YOUR PET FOR HURRICANE SEASON:
- PREPARE BEFORE THE EMERGENCY: GET YOUR ANIMALS READY BEFORE DISASTER STRIKES. KEEP PETS’ VACCINATIONS UP TO DATE. ENSURE ALL PETS WEAR COLLARS WITH UPDATED TAGS AND KEEP LEASHES CLOSE BY FOR SAFE TRANSPORT. GET YOUR PET MICROCHIPPED TO HELP INCREASE THE CHANCES OF RECONNECTION SHOULD YOU AND YOUR PET BECOME SEPARATED.
- PACK A PET EMERGENCY BAG: CREATE A ‘GO-BAG’ FOR YOURSELF AND YOUR PET. THIS BAG SHOULD INCLUDE FOOD AND WATER BOWLS, A BLANKET, TOYS AND DRY FOOD IN A STORAGE BAG. SPARE COLLARS AND LEASHES ARE IMPORTANT ADDITIONS AS WELL. IF YOUR PET REQUIRES SPECIAL MEDICATIONS, KEEP A TWO-WEEK SUPPLY ON HAND. PLACE YOUR ANIMAL’S BAG NEAR YOUR PERSONAL BAG SO THAT YOU ARE READY IN A HURRY.
- HAVE A PLAN: NATURAL DISASTERS ARE SCARY FOR HUMANS AND ANIMALS. HAVE A PLAN FOR EVACUATING OR SHELTERING IN PLACE WITH YOUR PET. REHEARSE SHELTERING IN PLACE WITH YOUR ANIMAL SO THEY BECOME ACCUSTOMED TO DOING SO. PRACTICE EVACUATING WITH THE MEMBERS IN YOUR HOUSEHOLD AND YOUR PETS. PRACTICE WALKING YOUR ANIMAL ON A LEASH IF YOUR PET IS NOT USED TO DOING SO. PRACTICE CARRYING YOUR PET IN A CARRIER IF YOUR ANIMAL IS NOT USED TO TRAVELING IN ONE. HAVE OTHER MEMBERS IN YOUR HOUSEHOLD RUN THROUGH THESE DRILLS AS WELL.
